The grade 8 MCAS allows calculator use
for part of the test. What would be the best use of the calculator?
For this no calculator was allowed. None was needed.
These numbers are easily done with mental math or simple
computation. Even if you don't know how to do
linear equations, you can see that (3x + y) plus (3x
+ y) = 6x +2y. The math is easy. You need logical thinking.
6+6=12. The answer is c.

Below is an example of one of the easier problems in the calculator
allowed section. You can see that this is more involved. Several operations
are required. It is possible to know all the operations and make careless math
errors. To test your knowledge of math operations and not just your careful
computation skills, you should use a calculator.

Juan’s parents put
$10,000 into a college education savings account at the rate of 6%
compounded annually. The chart
below shows the value of the original investment at the end
of years 1 and 2.

If no further deposits or
withdrawals are made, what will the value of the original
investment be at the end of year
4? Round your answer to the nearest dollar.
A. $11,836.00
B. $12,436.00
C. $12,584.00
D. $12,625.00

This problem is a lot harder and needs a calculator.
First you need to know how to do percents. Calculators are not magic
wands. You should know that percent of means multiply by the decimal (or
fraction) you changed the percent into. Here is a short cut. They want the
percent added to the value. Multiply by 1.06. The 1 gives you the value you
would have to add the .06 gives you the percent.
11,236.00 X 1.06 =11910.16
for year 3. Now multiply year 3 by 1.06 and round the answer to the
nearest dollar. Click the box when you have done this and written it on your
paper.
